J. Paul McNamara

Born in New York City and raised in Bay Shore, Long Island, J. Paul McNamara has resided in the Greater Washington area since 1970. He received a BA degree in 1970 from Dowling College on Long Island.
Mr. McNamara began his career with the Marriott Corporation in 1970. In 1973, Mr. McNamara joined Manufacturer Hanover Trust Company in New York. In 1976, he joined the National Bank of Washington where he worked for 12 years and held several senior management positions. Mr. McNamara served as President and Chief Operating Officer of SequoiaBank, a community bank with offices in Washington, DC, Suburban Maryland, and Virginia from 1988 to 2003. He is presently the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of United Bank and serves as a member of the Board of Directors of United Bankshares, Inc. a multi-bank holding company.

Mr. McNamara has been active in professional, community and charitable organizations throughout his life. He is a member of the Finance Council for the Archdiocese of Washington. Mr. McNamara is a Knight of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and serves as Treasurer for the Federal Association in Washington. Mr. McNamara is the Treasurer and a Board Member of the J.W. Marriott Hospitality Charter School in Washington, DC. He is also the Treasurer of the Washington Jesuit Academy. He is a member of the Finance Committee of the Christ Child Society of Washington, DC and a member of the Capital Campaign Cabinet for the Center City Consortium. Mr. McNamara is the past President and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.
Previously, Mr. McNamara, and his wife Jill, served as the Chairs of the Cardinal's Appeal for the Archdiocese of Washington for 2003 and 2004. He served as Chairman of the Board of Catholic Charities of Washington and was a member of its Board for six years. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Washington and served as its Chairman for five years. He served as the Treasurer and a Board Member of the Montgomery Hospice Foundation for eight years. He has served as a Board Member of the Art Barn and of Arts for the Aging, both Alzheimer related charities. He also has worked with the YMCA Partners with Youth and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Washington annual campaigns.
Mr. McNamara is a member of the Board of Directors of NCRIC, a publicly traded regional healthcare financial services company headquartered in Washington, DC. He is a member of the Board of Trade of Greater Washington, the American Bankers Association and the Maryland Bankers Associations. Mr. McNamara is active in his church, St. Jane de Chantal in Bethesda, as well as Georgetown Visitation School where his daughters have attended.
Mr. McNamara has been recognized over the years for his service to others. In 2002, the Catholic Business Network recognized him as the Man of the Year. He and Jill both were awarded the Caritas Award for their continued service to Catholic Charities. He was awarded the "Pro Ecclesia Et Pontifice" by Pope John Paul II for his service to the Church of Washington. Gonzaga College High School also presented Mr. McNamara their St. Ignatius Medal in recognition of his work for others.
