Walter J. (Joe) Stewart served as Secretary of the United States Senate from 1987 to 1994. In this capacity, he was the chief administrative and financial officer of the Senate, an ex officio member of the Federal Election Commission, a member of the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments of the Interparliamentary Union and advisor to the Senate Leadership. Mr. Stewart's private sector experience includes service as Vice President for Government Affairs of Sonat Inc., an energy production and transmission company. Earlier in his career, Mr. Stewart served as Secretary for the Majority of the Senate, Administrative Assistant to the Majority Leader for Floor Operations and as a member of the professional staff of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Mr. Stewart attended The George Washington University for undergraduate studies and received his LL.B. from The American University Law School.
